This is a hybrid role, requiring the successful candidate to attend our Tralee office.
Role Description
SMBC is seeking an experienced and driven VMware Systems Engineer to join our Enterprise Virtualization Group. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong passion for enterprise infrastructure who is eager to build a long-term career within a fast-growing, globally respected financial institution. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, deployment, and ongoing operation of critical VMware and enterprise infrastructure platforms across the organisation.
The role reports to the Director, Enterprise Virtualization Group
Role Objectives: Delivery
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain enterprise infrastructure including servers, storage platforms, networking, and telecommunications equipment.
- Deploy and manage server operating systems, database software, file services, authentication platforms, email servers, backup systems, and firewalls.
- Perform regular hardware and platform upgrades to ensure stability, performance, and security.
- Monitor system performance on a daily basis, proactively identifying risks and optimisation opportunities.
- Provide 2nd/3rd line support for infrastructure-related issues and act as an escalation point for major incidents.
- Participate in incident response and recovery activities for high-severity outages.
- Design, implement, and support VMware infrastructure solutions aligned with enterprise standards.
- Monitor, maintain, and optimise existing VMware environments to ensure high availability and performance.
- Troubleshoot complex performance, capacity, and availability issues across the virtual estate.
- Implement VMware best practices across compute, storage, and networking layers.
- Ensure VMware environments meet security, compliance, and audit requirements.
- Develop, maintain, and improve technical documentation, operational procedures, and runbooks.
- Operate monitoring and reporting tools, including performance, capacity, availability, and access auditing.
- Generate reports on key metrics such as system uptime, resource utilisation, storage capacity, backup performance, and incident trends.
- Support governance, controls, and compliance obligations in a regulated environment.
- Work closely with infrastructure, application, security, and operations teams to ensure seamless integration and service delivery.
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders across regions and teams.
- Contribute positively to a collaborative team culture while demonstrating leadership and ownership when required.
Qualifications and Skills
- 3+ years’ experience in VMware administration and engineering within an enterprise environment.
- Knowledge of VMware solutions:
- vSphere, vCenter, ESXi, vSAN, virtual networking, vRealize/Aria Suite - Operations, Automation, Log Insight
- Understanding of core Operating System concepts:
- CPU, Memory, Storage I/O, Networking
- VMware certification preferred:
- VCA, VCP, VCAP
- Exposure to scripting:
- PowerShell, PowerCLI, Ansible
- Knowledge of storage technologies:
- Fiber Chanel, SAN, NAS, vSAN, vVOLS
- Familiarity with networking fundamentals
- Familiarity with backup & recovery technologies:
- ArcServe, NetBackup, Tivoli, Rubrik, Cohesity, Veeam
- Familiarity with disaster recovery tools & fundamentals:
- vSphere Replication, SRM, SRDF, Zerto, RPO vs RTO
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across technical and business audiences.
- Highly organised with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage complex, multi-stream workloads.
- Proven ability to prioritise effectively, meet deadlines, and maintain momentum in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
- Self-motivated and disciplined, with a strong commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Collaborative team player who can confidently demonstrate leadership when required.
- High level of personal accountability, ownership, and follow-through, with a track record of delivering results.
