The anticipated salary range for this role is between $223,000.00 and $255,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.
Role Description
SMBC is seeking an Executive Director to serve as a Senior Credit Officer within the Credit Department. This role will lead a team of credit professionals focused on the energy and healthcare sectors, overseeing the review and challenge of credit applications submitted by the front office. The Senior Credit Officer will also be responsible for preparing and presenting executive summaries and recommendations to senior Credit Department management.
The position covers a broad range of credit exposures, including:
- Investment-grade and high-yield corporates
- Leveraged lending and asset-based lending (ABL)
- Trade finance and transaction banking products such as Accounts Receivable Purchase (ARP), Supply Chain Finance (SCF), and Inventory Financing
- Structured finance transactions, including securitization/ABS and leasing structures
The scope of review includes credit risk assessment, financial projections, transaction structure, facility terms, regulatory classification, profitability, and strategic relationship considerations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the credit review and approval process for complex corporate and structured finance transactions.
- Evaluate credit proposals, financial models, and risk-return profiles across a diverse range of products and sectors.
- Ensure alignment with SMBC’s credit policies and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor portfolio performance, identify emerging risks, and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Conduct periodic reviews and stress testing of credit exposures.
- Collaborate with front office, risk, legal, and compliance teams to structure sound and compliant transactions.
- Oversee and report on problem assets, including classified loans, through written memoranda and presentations.
- Present credit recommendations to senior management and credit committees.
- Contribute to the development and enhancement of credit policies, procedures, and risk frameworks.
- Support credit-related projects and initiatives as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum 15 years of experience in credit risk, corporate banking, or investment banking.
- Strong expertise in credit analysis for large-cap corporates, leveraged finance, and structured transactions.
- Experience with trade finance and transaction banking products (ARP, SCF, inventory financing).
- Familiarity with securitization/ABS structures and leasing transactions.
- Deep understanding of financial statements, cash flow modeling, and capital structures.
- Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills, with ability to communicate effectively with all levels of support and business partners
- Ability to manage significant deal volume in a fast-paced and multitasking environment
- Ability to align with SMBC’s credit philosophy and risk appetite.
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks (e.g., Basel III, OCC/FRB/FDIC guidelines).
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Economics, or a related field; MBA or CFA preferred.
