The anticipated salary range for this role is between $225,000.00 and $225,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation is seeking an Associate/Vice President to join its Strategic Financing Solutions group. SMBC’s Strategic Financing Solutions team is a rapidly growing platform in the US which will offer firsthand experience into the bespoke financing space with private equity and corporate actors. The group’s primary mission is to originate, structure and execute margin financing solutions to support financial sponsor activity. The candidate will work within the deal team to support senior bankers in the origination, execution and monitoring of bespoke financing solutions. This role will also work closely with our internal stakeholders, including but not limited to: sponsor coverage, corporate and investment banking, enterprise valuation, legal, tax, accounting, treasury, capital markets, compliance, credit risk and market risk.

Role Objectives

The Candidate is expected to co-lead and manage key aspects of the transaction origination, underwriting, approval and monitoring, including but not limited to:

  • Develop marketing materials and pitch books.
  • Actively participate in term sheet drafting and negotiations
  • Co-lead and manage every aspect of the transaction due diligence, underwriting, credit approval, and closing processes.
  • Evaluate counterparty risk, propose strategies and tools for portfolio monitoring.
  • Work with Credit Department and Market Risk to address concerns in order to secure transaction approvals.
  • Work closely with originators and legal counsel to draft, review, and negotiate loan agreements.
  • Liaison with KYC department to onboard new customers and with Operations to close, fund, and service transactions as Lender or Admin Agent.
  • Actively maintain and monitor transactions post close – including monitoring the Collateral , quarterly reviews, amendments and waivers, extensions and repricings.
  • Team to address any collateral issues that might have facility level impact.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in Investment Banking, Capital Markets or Global Markets at a top-tier firm post graduation from an MBA program, or equivalent degree and or working experience.
  • Experience of delivering investment banking or capital markets products and services to clients.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills.
  • Strong client relationships, marketing, presentation and sales skills are essential.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex client financial objectives, accounting or tax issues and alternative solutions or approaches.
  • Strong team player, willing to learn and assume responsibility and be enthusiastic about becoming a member of a successful and growing team.
  • The ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously & working effectively as an individual & as part of a team.
  • Creativity, problem solving skills, flexibility in approach and the ability to work with members of multiple product groups at the same time.
  • Preferred: working knowledge of Bloomberg, Capital IQ, notions of programming.
