The anticipated salary range for this role is between $110,000.00 and $200,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

SMBC's Global Financial Institutions Group (GFIG) is seeking an Analyst/Associate to join its Insurance Client Coverage team. The role provides the opportunity to work closely with insurance companies and financial sponsors, supporting the origination of financing, liquidity, and risk management solutions, public and private capital raising transactions, and strategic advisory engagements. In addition, the team serves as a key lending partner to SMBC's insurance clients, delivering customized financing solutions across a broad range of transaction types.

Role Objectives

  • Demonstrate a strong team-oriented mindset and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across product groups, industry teams, and geographic regions.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining a high degree of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Partner with GFIG's Insurance Client Coverage team as an integral part of debt capital markets origination efforts, and collaborating with Banking, Advisory, and Global Markets professionals to deepen client relationships, identify opportunities, and drive new business development.
  • Play a key role in the origination, approval, and execution of corporate lending transactions, including deal structuring, pricing, term sheet negotiation, financial modeling and analytics, credit and risk analysis, profitability assessment, capital allocation, legal documentation review, and ongoing portfolio monitoring.
  • Develop an understanding of insurance company accounting, rating agency, and regulatory capital frameworks, including Statutory Accounting, U.S. GAAP, IFRS, Risk-Based Capital (RBC), Solvency II, the Solvency Modernization Initiative (SMI), and IAIS capital standards.
  • Build expertise in insurance company capital structures and leverage considerations, with particular focus on rating agency methodologies and the treatment of debt, hybrid, and contingent capital instruments.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in corporate finance, corporate banking, debt capital markets, investment banking, ratings advisory, or a related field at a leading financial institution or rating agency.
  • Strong financial modeling, analytical, and quantitative skills, with the ability to assess credit, capital, and liquidity profiles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare client presentations, credit memoranda, and transaction-related materials.
  • Experience within the insurance sector is preferred, although candidates with broader financial institutions or corporate banking experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated interest in insurance markets, capital structures, and strategic financing solutions.
