The anticipated salary range for this role is between $150,000.00 and $200,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

The Financial Institutions Group is a worldwide network of industry experts who understand the economic landscape and the challenges facing financial institutions. To meet the needs of domestic and global institutional clients, we leverage the full suite of products across SMBC to provide unique financial solutions to clients within the following industry sectors: Banks and Broker Dealers, Regulated and Alternative Investment Managers and Funds, Insurance Companies and Specialty Finance Companies (including BDCs). In addition to providing corporate financing and other specialized financing to the financial sector, the FIG team partners with many business units throughout the SMBC Group to offer our clients a wide range of products, including Capital Markets (DCM, Capital Solutions, ABS, CLOs), Sales and Trading (Fixed Income), Trade Finance, Structured Financing (including Subscription Financing and Asset-based lending), FX/Derivatives, and Operational services.

The role within the Financial Institutions Group will be responsible for Banks and Broker Dealer client coverage, including all aspects of client development, new business generation, and cross-selling of SMBC Group’s various products and services. The individual will partner with product areas specialists to elevate the dialogue with clients and further grow the Banks and Broker Dealers platform within GFIG. Candidates should have general bank knowledge to include: bank capital structure, and a general understanding of regulatory requirements. Regional Bank coverage experience is a plus.

Role Objectives

  • Support the origination and execution of transactions with Banks and Broker Dealer clients
  • Work closely across the Private Debt Complex to assist in advising Banks on optimal capital structure, balance sheet optimization and raising debt in the public/private markets
  • Assist the team with client relationships to develop new business opportunities.
  • Cross-sell products that enhance the return from a balance sheet utilization perspective, as the Global Financial Institutions Group partners with many business units throughout SMBC to offer our Banks clients the full range of SMBC products and services globally
  • A self-motivated individual that can adjust quickly to new challenges and changes in the client landscape

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven ability to take initiative and work well both independently, and as part of a team in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
  • An interest in the regulatory framework for Banks and Broker Dealers, to include industry regulations, policies and procedures
  • Good understanding of the Financial Institutions sector, global market trends and ability to adapt to changing market conditions
  • Knowledge of capital markets products and services relevant to the Banks and Broker Dealer clients
  • Knowledge of general elements of credit risk as well as legal/compliance related to Bank and Broker Dealers
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to build a network of relationships across SMBC to support and facilitate communication and/or execution of new business ideas and opportunities
  • 2+ years of specialized experience in FIG, Capital Markets (i.e. DCM) or FIG Investment Banking
