The anticipated salary range for this role is between $250,000.00 and $250,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

Provide origination, execution and capital markets' knowledge to grow the U.S. Debt Capital Markets business, focusing on the coverage of Financial Institutions. Work closely with relevant team members to advise and develop creative financing solutions for clients of the firm, specifically in the Insurance, Global and Regional Bank, Private Equity, Asset Manager, and BDC/Private Lender sectors. Provide advice regarding capital structure, execution strategies, relative value pricing, market updates and corporate finance strategies to our clients as well as internal constituents.
 

Role Objectives

  • Assist senior coverage officer with support of important client relationships, with goal of transitioning into a Primary Coverage role for certain accounts/sectors
  • Collaborate with SMBC's Global Financial Institutions banking group to identify financing opportunities, risk management strategies, other concepts / idea generation, and execute transactions for SMBC clients
  • Identify derivative, hedging, liability management revenue opportunities as well as cross-sell other products such as loan capital markets
  • Primary focus on USD capital markets, though collaborate with SMBC global colleagues to provide clients with knowledge and access to non-USD markets, notably including JPY
  • Provide quality control on presentation and communication with clients as well as idea generation on proposals to clients and prospect names and subsequent follow up as required
  • Provide clients and colleagues with feedback on market conditions, receptivity to new issues, feedback on the credit, and secondary market prices and volumes
  • Generate and maintain client presentations and assist with special ad-hoc projects and initiatives as assigned
  • Provide leadership and development of the junior staff within DCM 
     

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven experience in debt financing. Ability to follow up independently and play the role of project manager. Ability to manage several projects at once and work effectively as an individual contributor and as part of a team.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, ability to synthesize large amounts of information, analyze risk and identify mitigating factors. 
  • Demonstrates a high degree of attention to detail and an ability to complete work accurately and in a timely manner against strict deadlines.
  • Highly collaborative and flexible in a team and client environment with ability to form good relationships internally and externally. Able to coordinate and communicate with various internal departments across the bank (middle/back office, global counterparts).
  • Ability to organize thoughts and clearly articulate points and provide summaries and explanations of transactions, orally or in writing in a persuasive and organized manner to management or other internal departments.
  • Works well in a culturally diverse and team-oriented environment. Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and an interest in continuous learning.
