The anticipated salary range for this role is between $173,000.00 and $275,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

This role leads the Compliance Infrastructure Advisory team, partnering with compliance and management teams to uphold and communicate the company’s culture of compliance. The position is responsible for regulatory compliance across support functions, including coordinating updates to policies, procedures, and regulatory guidance. The ideal candidate will provide expert opinions on the adequacy and effectiveness of compliance processes while maintaining familiarity with U.S. banking and securities laws and regulations. 

Role Objectives

As Head of Compliance Infrastructure Advisory, you will: 

  • Coordinate bank, broker-dealer, and swap dealer regulatory Compliance programs across SMBC’s Americas Division for all support functions. 
  • Provide advisory coverage and guidance across support teams such as Finance, Operations, and IT. 
  • Manage a team of three direct reports. 
  • Support areas such as trade reporting, recordkeeping, and swap dealer compliance. 
  • Ensure compliance with certain SMBC obligations, including timely and accurate completion of confirmations. 
  • Participate in updates and reviews of compliance policies for bank, broker-dealer, and swap dealer regulations. 
  • Design and deliver compliance training programs by creating relevant materials and conducting workshops as needed. 
  • Collaborate with SMEs and teams across functions, including Compliance Surveillance and Swap Dealer Advisory, to review control reports and enhance processes. 
  • Conduct and support risk assessment exercises on both annual and ad-hoc bases. 
  • Serve on committees as a subject matter expert for regulatory compliance in banking and broker-dealer matters. 

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will bring: 

  • At least 15 years of financial services experience, with a strong focus on regulatory compliance. 
  • Deep understanding of U.S. banking and securities laws to provide benchmarking insights and identify compliance control gaps. 
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, and communication skills. 
  • Proven ability to handle highly confidential matters with sound judgment, integrity, and professionalism. 
  • Expertise in complex financial products, systemic risk management, and operational compliance. 
  • Experience working for non-U.S. banks/broker-dealers and familiarity with global regulatory frameworks (preferred). 
  • Knowledge of regulatory agencies such as the Federal Reserve, SEC/FINRA, and CFTC/NFA (preferred but not required).
