The anticipated salary range for this role is between $122,000.00 and $175,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

The Data Architect is a key role in the SMBC Americas Division Chief Data Officer’s Information Control Department. The Data Architect will work under the direction of the Enterprise Data Architect and collaborate across stakeholders (product managers, project managers, business analysts, and testers) to elicit and analyze data requirements. The data architect is required to assist with designs, maintains, and builds conceptual, logical data models and data-driven solutions. They will also be responsible for data architecture, design, creation and optimization.

Role Objectives: Delivery

  • Meet with business stakeholders and other technical team members to gather analyze application requirements
  • Design conceptual and logical data models
  • Work with other architects across the Americas Division to explore and define how the proposed solutions will fit into the enterprise data architecture
  • Gaining an understanding of our Current State and then defining the Target State Architecture and Strategy.
  • Drive towards adoption of the target state architecture by executing on the strategy.
  • Facilitates data discovery and design sessions with business stakeholders and other technical team members to gather and analyze database requirements.
  • Introduce best practices and principles to enable consistent delivery and enable alignment with long term direction.
  • Foster best practices within the team.
  • Facilitate communication with cross-functional groups.
  • Work with our technology organizations to develop business requirements into architecture and integrate into our longer term platform strategy.
  • Define solution level architecture for project teams including guidance on development tools, target platforms, operations, and security.
  • Stay up to date on new tools & techniques in the data space.
  • Perform prototypes/POC, to validate new solutions and methods.
  • Voting member of the Database Review Process.

Role Objectives: Interpersonal

  • Work with business unit leads to establish data input and usage policies and procedures.
  • Partner with compliance colleagues to audit data retention and access policies to ensure they meet regulatory standards and conform to corporate risk management guidelines.
  • Collaborate with IT systems and database administrators to design data structures that meet objectives for security, integration and retention of data.
  • Coordinate training of employees in the correct application of data standards.
  • Engage with application development team to create tools and automate processes that ensure data accuracy, apply correct standardization to support data integration, and create systems to enable efficient querying and use of corporate data.
     

Role Objectives: Expertise

  • Display comprehensive knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry best practices for data governance and data Architecture.
  • Demonstrate advanced expertise in data storage systems, integration tools, quality controls, and data management strategies.
  • Possess understanding of corporate data sources, implementations and business operations utilizing data systems to inform the recommendation of best practices and standards.
  • Exhibit ability to coordinate data initiatives across multiple teams to ensure adherence to best practices and meet data governance objectives.
     

Qualifications and Skills

  • 5+ years of experience architecting, designing and developing large scale data solutions utilizing a mixture of Big Data and Relational database platforms.
  • Experience in both design and develop of enterprise level operational and data warehouse database systems.
  • Experience with Logical and Conceptual Data Modeling.
  • Prior experience in designing and developing standard database objects tables, stored procedures, views, functions, indexes.
  • Database design experience and experience with data modeling tools like Erwin etc.
  • Experience leading design sessions and code walkthroughs.
  • Advanced experience in one or more of the following:
    • Databricks
    • Microsoft SQL Server
    • Oracle
    • MySQL
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or related degree from an accredited university.
