The Vulnerability Management team identifies, analyzes, and reports on vulnerabilities across SMBC. Through a proactive, risk-based approach, the team addresses security gaps to protect the Bank’s networks and data from cyberattacks, safeguard its reputation, and maintain customer trust.

In this role, you will configure vulnerability scans, research emerging threats, conduct risk assessments, identify attack vectors, coordinate remediation, and report on compliance and improvement opportunities across the enterprise. Success requires a proactive, diligent, and organized professional who learns quickly and adapts to a growing technology footprint and changing threats. You will collaborate with teams across the Bank to communicate and address risk and promote secure technologies aligned with security standards.

This role offers a security professional the opportunity to work with leading-edge tools and technologies in a challenging, complex enterprise environment.

Role Objectives

  • Triage vulnerability alerts from security tools, external intelligence providers, penetration tests, and user-reported findings to assess their impact on the organization.
  • Configure vulnerability scans and policy checks across networks, infrastructure, and applications, and perform manual testing as needed to validate findings.
  • Partner with business units to conduct vulnerability assessments, advise on risk reduction strategies, and oversee remediation to ensure vulnerabilities are addressed within required timelines.
  • Model attack surface risks and communicate high-risk areas to stakeholders in collaboration with the Threat Intelligence and Threat Hunting functions.
  • Contribute to periodic vulnerability management reports and metrics for management.
  • Tune vulnerability management tools to expand coverage, reduce false positives and false negatives, and improve operational processes.
  • Collaborate with the Optimization team to implement detections and mitigations, including intrusion prevention system signatures, to protect against relevant threats.
  • Promote continuous improvement by proactively investigating emerging risks and opportunities to strengthen the Bank’s security posture.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Foundational cybersecurity knowledge gained through academic study, labs, internships, personal projects, or professional experience.
  • Familiarity with the MITRE ATT&CK framework and common network and web-based attacks, and an understanding of how they relate to vulnerability assessment.
  • Foundational knowledge of operating systems, networking, web applications, and common infrastructure components.
  • Hands-on exposure to vulnerability assessment tools through coursework, labs, projects, internships, or employment, including interpreting scan results, validating findings.
  • Understanding of how exploitability, exposure, asset criticality, business impact, and mitigating controls inform vulnerability prioritization.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and collaborate with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Preferred: Experience coordinating remediation with technology owners, tracking progress, and documenting closure evidence or approved exceptions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze datasets, identify patterns, and summarize findings clearly.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented approach, strong organizational skills, willingness to learn, and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Preferred: Ability to use scripting to automate tasks and improve operational processes.
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of cloud technologies and containerized environments.
