The anticipated salary range for this role is between $137,000.00 and $196,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.
Role Description
- A highly skilled and detail-oriented Data Engineer / SQL Developer responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust data pipelines and SQL-based solutions that support business intelligence, analytics, and operational reporting.
- The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in SQL development, data modeling, and ETL processes, with a strong understanding of data warehousing and cloud-based data platforms.
Role Objectives: Delivery
- Collaborate with IT and business teams to plan and implement production deployments of software, reports, and configuration changes.
- Provide high-quality systems support to operations and finance teams, ensuring efficient and accurate usage of internally developed tools and reports.
- Assist the Leasing Finance back-office team with configuration changes to the core lease/loan accounting system.
- Deliver projects on time and within budget, adhering to project plans and timelines.
- Develop and maintain tools to improve data quality across Leasing Finance systems and ensure accuracy in downstream data feeds and processes.
- Respond promptly to data quality issues and reporting requests from internal stakeholders.

Oversee support teams responding to day-to-day technical issues and manage the incident response to service outages.

Analyze impact of reported service issues and quickly develop remediation plans.

Implement deployment of application code changes and upgrades to both testing and production environments.

Create and manage reporting tools, log collection and maintenance scripts to ensure seamless operation of application, proactive issue identification and data extraction.

- Partner with business team leads to gain insight into user needs and develop a plan to improve the utility of implemented applications.
- Advise the development team of business unit needs and advise on the creation of a roadmap for new processes and features.
- Engage with key application users to study key business processes, and advise on building procedures to best utilize application features.
- Conduct periodic meetings of support staff to discuss incident patterns and identify new policies and procedures to improve utility or reliability of applications.

Role Objectives: Expertise
- Exhibit mastery with Querying and reporting tools, incident management and issue analysis to improve support procedures and methods.
- Display comprehensive knowledge of back-end query tools, ETL and scripting languages to support monitoring and proactive issue identification.
- Possess required knowledge of application development languages like python to enable real-time debugging of application issues and troubleshooting of code.
- Show ability to provide counsel to business units in planning and implementation of business applications.
Qualifications and Skills
Technical Skills
- Strong expertise in MS SQL Server: advanced querying, stored procedures, performance tuning, and data modeling.
- Proficient in Python for data processing, automation, and scripting.
- Solid understanding of ETL development, maintenance, and optimization.
- Experience with Data Warehousing concepts, including Star Schema, Fact and Dimension tables.
- Familiarity with data governance, data quality frameworks, and compliance best practices.
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms such as Azure SQL Data Warehouse, Azure Data Factory
- Knowledge of Azure Fundamentals and cloud-native data engineering practices.
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps is a plus.
- Exposure to data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) is an advantage.
Additional Requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
- At least 7 years of experience in data analysis, SQL development
- Microsoft certifications (e.g., Azure Data Engineer Associate, Azure Fundamentals) are a plus.
Domain Knowledge

- Ability to gather, analyze, and translate business requirements into scalable data solutions.
- Understanding of basic accounting principles and financial systems.
- Strong experience in regulatory reporting within the finance domain.
- Knowledge of database normalization, data integrity, and metadata management.
