Role Description
SMBC is seeking an Associate to join the Office of the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) Business Management team to support risk governance, executive reporting and CRO business-management activities. The individual will work closely with the team and risk verticals to develop executive-level risk reporting and strategic communications that inform senior leadership, Board, and regulatory decision-making. The role requires the ability to identify key issues, connect risk themes across functions, distill complex risk information into clear, concise, and actionable insights, and tailor messaging for executive, board, Head Office, and regulatory audiences.
The Associate will also support budget management, governance routines, committee materials, risk reporting process improvements, and other activities that advance CRO priorities. Success in this role requires strong analytical judgment, the ability to synthesize complex risk information into clear executive insights, and a balance of meticulous attention to detail with strategic, big-picture thinking. The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, eager to learn, comfortable operating independently, and skilled at building collaborative relationships across Risk and partner functions.
This is a hybrid position based in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Role Objectives
- Develop executive-level materials that distill, render, and visualize complex risk issues in a concise, accurate, and audience-appropriate manner.
- Translate data and technical risk content into clear narratives that highlight key messages, implications, required decisions, next steps, and potential trade-offs.
- Support recurring and ad hoc CRO reporting, including materials for senior management, Board, Head Office, regulatory meetings, and risk committees.
- Coordinate inputs across risk verticals, challenge unclear or incomplete content and help ensure timely completion of high-quality materials.
- Support risk committee processes, including agenda/material preparation, meeting minutes, action item tracking, and governance documentation as needed.
- Identify opportunities to improve reporting processes, data quality, visual consistency, and overall effectiveness of risk communications.
- Assist with budget management, headcount tracking, dashboard visuals, and reporting routines that support CRO Office priorities and organizational planning.
- Support Risk Organization goal setting and tracking and other CRO office initiatives as needed
Qualifications and Skills
- 3+ years of experience in risk management within a large U.S. bank/FBO, banking-focused consulting firm, regulatory agency, or comparable financial services environment.
- Experience developing executive presentations, reports, dashboards, and briefing materials for senior management, governance committees, or regulatory audiences.
- Working knowledge of enterprise risk management and major risk disciplines, including Credit, Market, Liquidity/Treasury, Operational, Model, Technology/Data/Cyber, and Compliance/Regulatory Risk.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex risk concepts into clear, concise, and audience-appropriate messaging.
- Strong analytical judgment and structured thinking, with the ability to identify key themes, implications, decisions, trade-offs, actions, and accountabilities while balancing attention to detail with an enterprise-wide perspective.
- Interest in connecting risk themes across functions and understanding the impact of market, macroeconomic, regulatory, and business developments on the firm's risk profile.
- Effective stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across Risk, partner functions, senior management, Head Office, and regulatory stakeholders.
- Self-starter who can manage multiple priorities, work independently, and perform effectively in a dynamic and evolving environment.
- Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Excel, Power BI, dashboarding, or other reporting and visualization tools is preferred.
- Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, integrity, and discretion in handling sensitive information and executive-level materials.
