Role Description
SMBC is seeking a Business Analyst with strong project experience. This role supports the implementation, operationalization and ongoing optimization of the Anti-Fraud Operations technology portfolio to reduce fraud risk for SMBC and its customers. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of how to capture requirements, create test cases, conduct UAT testing, analyze payment flows, support data validation, and develop dashboards / reports to drive outcomes.
The Business Analyst will partner with business stakeholders, Anti-Fraud Operations, Risk Management, Compliance, Technology, and vendors to support project delivery within scope, timeline and budget across the fraud program.
Responsibilities
- Partner with business, operations, compliance, and technology stakeholders as well as vendor teams to gather functional and non-functional requirements in support of anti-fraud and payment initiatives.
- Document business requirements, user stories, process flows, acceptance criteria, and test scenarios to provide traceability and project updates.
- Translate complex business processes into clear specifications for technology teams.
- Manage project work in Jira for sprint planning and backlog management while maintaining clear documentation in Confluence, Jira and SharePoint.
- Support the full project lifecycle including requirements, design, UAT, implementation and post-production support.
- Support testing and UAT activities including creation of test cases for critical business and payment workflows and management of defects to resolution.
- Support project lead to manage end-to-end project delivery within scope, timeline, and budget.
- Apply payments knowledge to support workflow analysis, evaluate operational handoffs, exception handling, controls and fraud risk considerations.
- Use SQL and reporting tools to support data validation, issue investigation, root cause analysis, develop dashboards and reports.
- Facilitate stakeholder communication across compliance, risk management, technology, and operations teams; manage risks/issues and ensure adherence to project governance standards.
- Ability to adapt to evolving business dynamics, priorities, and managing stakeholder expectations as circumstances require, while ensuring effective delivery in fast-paced environments.
- Provide support to operations as needed during unusual heavier than expected volumes as well as when short-staffed.
- Work with third-party vendors (e.g., Actimize, Mitek, Inscribe, PwC, etc.) for system enhancements, integrations and delivery.
- Work in the office for a minimum of three days / week and remaining days, work from home.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience: 5+ years of business analysis, data analysis, project management, or technology delivery experience within financial services
- Technical Knowledge:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio, Copilot, Teams)
- Strong working knowledge of testing platforms (Confluence/Jira) for user stories, backlog management, defect tracking, dashboard, and documentation
- Familiarity with SQL for data analysis, validation, troubleshooting, and issue investigation.
- Exposure to fraud detection systems (Actimize, Mitek, Verafin, Inscribe, etc.).
- Methodology:
- Strong understanding of the full project lifecycle including requirements, design, testing, UAT, implementation, and post-production support.
- Strong understanding of Waterfall and Agile/Scrum delivery frameworks
- Domain Expertise: Knowledge of fraud risk surveillance and regulatory frameworks.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to analyze complex datasets and deliver actionable insights.
- Highly organized with ability to prioritize.
- Self-starter with strong ability to multi-task and solve business challenges.
- Highly developed sense of accountability and follow through.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with ACH, wire, SWIFT, check or similar payment products
- Exposure to fraud detection systems (e.g., Actimize, Mitek, Verafin, Inscribe, etc.) or similar systems
- Good understanding of payment processing flows, operational handoffs, exception handling, and related controls.
